Preventative Care
Preventative care is what you do to keep your teeth healthy so they don’t need expensive repairs. Typically covered at up to 100% by your dental insurance plan, preventive services include routine and deep cleanings, exam fees, x-rays, and topical fluoride treatments.
The most important part of preventive care is daily effective brushing and flossing. This keeps the mouth free of harmful bacteria and helps reduce gum disease, tooth decay, and secondary health issues like respiratory problems.
Developing these habits early on is also essential for kids so their permanent teeth grow in strong and healthy. This helps them avoid costly procedures in adulthood, such as fillings and root canals.
Restorative Care
When a tooth is damaged or broken, restorative procedures are performed to repair the damage. These include dental fillings, root canals and crowns. These procedures improve chewing function and the overall appearance of the smile. Generally, the family dentist performs these procedures.
A filling is a minor restorative treatment that involves drilling out decay, cleaning and sanitizing the area and then filling in the tooth with a resin. A root canal is a more extreme procedure that involves draining the infected pulp inside the tooth, cleaning and sanitizing the roots and then filling the tooth with a resin.
Dental implants are a great teeth replacement option that don’t require the modification of existing natural teeth and look very similar to the surrounding teeth. A quality dentist can replace a missing tooth with an implant, bridge or denture. A good family dentistry group will have experience treating patients of all ages, from young children to adults.
Cosmetic Care
While family dentists are trained in the preventative care of teeth, many also practice cosmetic dentistry. They use refined techniques to trounce cavities, clean gums, and beautify smiles. These include professional hygiene cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants, which help to fill the pits and fissures on the teeth that brushing alone can’t reach. They can also do fillings when needed, and they may recommend a crown for a broken tooth that will encase it and protect the healthy part of the tooth underneath. They can also repair a bridge that replaces a missing tooth with two “teeth” on either side that look like the natural ones.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer, which occurs in the lining of the mouth, tongue and cheeks, is responsible for killing 10,000 people each year in the United States. Screenings performed during routine dental exams can increase the likelihood of early detection, and thus reduce treatment-related health problems down the road. 이일우치과
Screenings are noninvasive and conducted by a dentist or physician. The individual rinses the patient’s mouth with a special blue dye, allowing any abnormal tissue to take up the color and stand out from healthy tissues. They then visually examine the gum tissues, lips, chin, roof of the mouth, throat and insides of the cheeks, along with palpating (feeling) the neck and jaw for any unusual lumps.
A follow-up visit may be scheduled to observe the problem area and see if it grows or changes over time, or a biopsy may be required if a symptom is detected. Patients who smoke or drink heavily, or who spend a lot of time in the sun without protective lotion, are at high risk for oral cancer.
